31 Nights of Halloween - Night 18

Hello, Whimsy fans!  It's Andrea with you for Night 18, and I have a fun box card to share with you featuring the Halloweeners and Halloween Scream stamp sets.  I also have a GIVEAWAY, so be sure to read to the end of this post!

Halloweeners is one of my favorite Whimsy sets, and I knew I had to use it for my post.  I stamped the images from Halloweeners with Versafine Onyx Black ink and colored them with my Zigs.  Using my trusty ScanNCut, I cut out the images and set them aside to work on creating my box card.

Inspired by the uber-talented Rachel Alvarado, I cut two pieces of white cardstock measuring 4 1/4" x 6" and scored both pieces at 3 1/2" and 5 1/2".  After rotating the pieces, I scored them at 2 1/4".  Using my paper trimmer, I cut the panels at the 3 1/2" and 5 1/2" scoremarks, stopping at the 2 1/4" scoremark.  For the interior of the box, I cut two strips of white cardstock at 1 3/4" x 4 1/2" and scored them at 1/2" and 4".

I trimmed another piece of white cardstock 3 1/2" x 4 1/2" to create my inside panel.  I stamped the graveyard scene from Halloween Scream with Versafine Onyx Black and colored the gravestones with a gray Zig.  After masking the gravestones and hill, I blended the sky with Stormy Sky, Faded Jeans, and Black Soot Distress Oxides.  I removed the mask, covered the sky, and blended with Crushed Olive, Peeled Paint, and Black Soot Distress Oxides.  Due to the nature of the oxides, my stamped image was not as clear as when I first stamped it.  After carefully lining up the stamp onto my panel, I re-stamped the graveyard.  If you have a MISTI or similar stamping positioner, I would recommend leaving the stamp in the tool to make re-stamping super easy.

For my grass pieces, I inked up white cardstock with the same Distress Oxides used for the grass on the back panel.  I die-cut the cardstock with the Grass & Cloud Edger Dies and trimmed each piece to 3 1/2".  With the Dracula's Coffin Dies, I die-cut two tombstones from gray cardstock.  I added gray ink to the die-cuts and stamped sentiments from Halloweeners.  I die-cut the skull and crossbones from whie cardstock with the Dracula's Coffin Dies and added a little gray ink to the edges.  The bats on the back panel are from the Bats and Bubbles Border Die Set.  After all of my elements were ready, I assembled my box card with a combination of liquid adhesive and ScorTape.  To keep my colored images from bending, I added strips of white cardstock behind them, securing them to the interior crosspieces.

I decorated the flaps of my card with some Hocus Pocus Designer Paper.  I trimmed the spider web paper to 1 7/8" x 2 1/8" for the side flaps and 3 7/8" x 2 1/8" for the front.  Before attaching the piece to the front flap, I adhered the ghost and trimmed off the excess.  I inked up white cardstock with Peeled Paint Distress Oxide and die-cut it with the Happy Halloween Word Dies.  I layered that die-cut onto a white die-cut and adhered them to the flap.  I stamped a sentiment from You're My Boo onto a strip of white cardstock and popped it up with foam tape.

I hope you were inspired by my spooky box card.  Now, are you ready for a GIVEAWAY?!  One lucky commenter will win the following collection: Happy Halloween Word Dies, Dracula's Coffin Dies, and Bats and Bubbles Border Dies.  To enter the giveaway, simply leave a comment below sharing a favorite Halloween story (The scarier, the better!).

  5. Awesome card! Scariest story is not exactly Halloween...but scary none-the-less! Eons ago, I was (well...still am!) a back-in-the-day Wayne Gretzky fan (hockey fame, Canadian superstar). He was a sponsor of GWG jeans and, in certain stores, the ad appeared as a cardboard, life-size Gretzy, sporting both the jeans and his Edmonton Oilers hockey jersey.

One night - wee hours of the morning - I awoke with the distinct, eerie feeling that someone/something was in my room (main floor room of my parents' house). I'm exponentially near-sighted, but could make out a 'shadow'...heart-racing, sweating, not sure whether to scream or cower under the covers...I tried to remain as still as possible. The 'whoever' in my room didn't appear to move, so ever so slowly, I reached for my glasses...and in the light of the moon, I saw...the cardboard Gretzky! My sister and her then-boyfriend thought it would be a 'great' joke to put him into my room - evidently to scare the bejeebers out of me - and they were successful! As for my 'big ol' Wayne'...he's still at my mom's. My 7-year-old nephew is a fabulous hockey player; perhaps Wayne should go to him (although, at the moment, Bobby Orr is his hero!). Anyway...a creepy shadows looming in the darkness...once was enough!

  8. BOO-tiful card!
LOVE your SPOOKY scene, EERIE dimension and WONDERFULLY colored images - WOW!!!
I make a variety of treat boxes each year and fill them with individually wrapped treats. Needless to say, the number of little (and not-so-little) treaters grows each year. I dress up as a wicked witch and my husband helps decorate the front garden and front of our house. The treaters have to come to the front door to get their treats and our screen is a blackout, we can see out, visitors can't see in. Anyway, last year as a little boy and his mother approached the door, I gave my BEST witch cackle EVER, the mother got such a fright that she jumped, her son & I could not stop laughing ... EVERYONE was happy after they got to choose their treats to take home. Most of the repeat visitors say how much they love their treats and how they keep their treat boxes, adding to their collection each year. I've already started my CACKLE exercises and nearly got the treat boxes ready for this Halloween, lots of cutting ahead this week :)

  10. I love box cards and this is faBOOlous and fun! Really cute.
Love the fun characters. I don't have a scary Halloween story!
But I remember as a kid trick or treating every year, we would
come home (3 of us) and all dump out our candy on the floor and
see what we got. There was a bit of trading going on, too. :-)

  11. What a great card box you have created! Thank you for posting instructions on how to put it together. Amazing job with your coloring, too! :)

As for scary Halloween stories, my favorites are from Stephen King and his son, Joe Hill. I remember as a teenager when I first read The Shining, I wouldn't even sleep with the book in the room with me. ;) Hill's Heart Shaped Box is one of my favorites of his.

  12. My favorite Halloween story is my own. My family moved to a different city, but went back to our old neighborhood to trick or treat with our friends from the old neighborhood. The 3 brothers were older than my brother and me. At one house, they put an M80 in a pumpkin on someone's porch and blew it up. Now that is scary. It's not fake monsters, it's cleaning up pumpkin goo from all over the exterior of the house!!! Even at 7 years old I knew that they shouldn't have done it, but they didn't listen to me. Can you think of anything scarier/worse than cleaning up sticky/icky pumpkin splatters from your house? Yes, there are worse things, but it was PRETTY BAD!!!!

  14. I love your card, I love the pop up cards.
My favorite Halloween adventure was taking my kiddos to the Mickey mouse not so scary Halloween party. I am a big chicken so that's about the most scary I can handle. Thanks for sharing your beautiful card. Jessie

  15. Spectacular shadow box! So much amazing details. So this scary story didn't happen to me but I was the culprit. I have a much younger sister than myself, like 20 years younger. And I was usually stuck with babysitting her for bedtime. My not so bright 20 year old self just wanted to go out with my friends and so I figured I would scare her into sleep. For years I would make howling noises and scare her into going to sleep. It worked and I got to go out! I never told her that those noises were actually me and she grew up thinking that she was haunted. Until recently, when we were sharing stories and I finally told her that all those howling noises she heard as a kid were just her big sister.

  16. Fabulous card. My best scariest Halloween story is when my brother was getting married they had their rehearsal party on Halloween night. Everyone was in costume. We decided we'd walk the neighborhood and see the decorations. There was Frankenstein's monster at a door way and we wanted to get a better look. Unfortunately my older brother was the first to get there to see him and we were right behind him. It turns out that Frankenstein's monster was a real person waiting for unsuspecting trick or treaters but scared the beejeebers out of us adults. My oldest brother had an adult beverage and it went flying all over the rest of us as he mowed us all over trying to get out of the way. We'll never forget being scared like that. Oh what fun that was. [Bunny]`

  19. I adore your Halloween peepers box with that gal vamp with the red eyes and the spider paper accents! It is to DIE for!

We go to town for Halloween and pull out all the stops. One year in Hawaii, on base housing, we hung a black fleece blanket(s) across our front porch so there was only one way to get to the door to get candy.
There were spiders decorating the trees, shrubs, and other spooky heads admits the bushes. My husband rigged the fog machine to blow out the front door in spurts. There were also multiple flashing strobe lights, a black light, AND full on spooky music blasting from our house. My husband took turns sitting on the porch, behind the curtain and then would go behind the front porch screen door and jump out and scare the kids in his scarecrow dressed body but full vampire rubber mask. Before I left, I would sit or lurk in the other spot, and help scare too. I had on a black outfit and painted my face with with glow in the dark paint and had on a long gray hair wig.
I took the kids around the neighborhood, and as I rounded the corner to see our house I saw a younger kid at the door, who then screamed (like horror movie scream!), threw his candy 🍬 in the air, and ran down the street screaming louder! I was laughing so hard as I went after him tears streaming down my white ghost face, and my husband came out without his mask on... and we calmed him down eventually ... but was that kid scared!!!
    Best memory!
The thing that scared me most as a kid, was Dracula and I had to close my closet at night so he could not come in my room! Ha!

  20. Andrea, this is awesome! Would you believe I've never tried to make an exploding box card? My worst Halloween stories or nightmare, I should say, was begging to go to a haunted house at the age of 10 or 12. We waited in line forever and I was really chickening out when people were running out screaming at the end. When it was finally our turn, I was literally shaking. The whole thing was a horrifying experience, from creepy characters grabbing me in the dark, cobwebs in my face and, you guessed it.... being chased by a freak in a chainsaw out the door. I have NEVER stepped foot in one of those places again. Ever! LOL Terri Burson
